Volunteers are vital to our mission.

Volunteers founded our organization in 1981, and more than four decades later, they remain at the heart of the care we provide.

We invite you to join our volunteer team and become part of a compassionate community dedicated to supporting patients and families during some of life’s most meaningful moments. With a variety of programs and roles available, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life. Some work full time, some are retired, and others volunteer while attending school. No matter your schedule or stage of life, we work with you to find an opportunity that fits.

While training is required, we make the process welcoming and straightforward, providing the guidance and support you need to feel confident and prepared as a Hospice Care Plus volunteer.

Here are just some of the ways you can be part of our care and services.

Care and Companionship

Volunteers are matched with patients and caregivers who need a little extra support. They may call to check on them, agree to visit every couple of weeks for companionship, or give the caregiver a break for a few hours. Volunteers in this role may bring special skills to the match, such as scrapbooking, that come in handy in working with a caregiver or patient. Care and companionship volunteers might agree to one-time matches for a simple task, like running an errand, or commit to a long-term match involving ongoing visits.

Administrative Support

Volunteers in this role support our administrative and clinical staff by covering shifts at the Compassionate Care Center front desk. Shifts typically range from one to four hours. Front desk volunteers answer phones, greet visitors, and assist with tasks such as making copies, watering plants, organizing the snack cart, and other light administrative duties.

Administrative volunteers may also help with filing, scanning, and more IT related tasks based on interest and skill set.

Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer Program

In this program, veteran volunteers use their own military experience to support and honor veteran patients. As part of our participation in the national We Honor Veterans partnership, volunteers are trained to provide one-on-one recognition presentations, thanking veteran patients for their service and sacrifice.

Veteran volunteers may also be matched with veteran patients to offer understanding, shared connection, and meaningful companionship.

Group Volunteer Projects

Grief & Loss Support

Volunteers support the work of our Grief & Loss Support program in many ways. They may call to check on a bereaved person, help mail supportive materials, or even assist with a shadowbox workshop. On the first Sunday of December, they often help us host our annual Remembrance Tree Ceremony. Volunteers who have a heart for supporting those who have lost a loved one are perfect for this role.

One afternoon, our hospice, Hospice Care Plus, was called to see if we could help a young Navy veteran, Mr. Jones (name changed), who was essentially homeless.
