Our Speaker: Katrina Nickels, MD, Addiction Medicine Fellow, University of Kentucky
Katrina Nickels, MD, is currently an Addiction Medicine Fellow at the University of Kentucky (UK). She has also served as a Center to Advance Palliative Care’s (CAPC) virtual office hours faculty and as an associate medical director with Bluegrass Care Navigators (BCN). Also at BCN, she led the HEALing Transitions Care Program for Opioid Use Disorder as part of UK’s HEALing Communities Study. Additional experience in substance use disorder includes several committee positions at Saint Joseph Health, Baptist Health, and BCN. Dr. Nickels is an active member of the Palliative Care Research Cooperative, the Kentucky and the American Societies of Addiction Medicine, the American Academy of Pain Medicine, CAPC, and the American Association of Hospice & Palliative Medicine. She is a frequent presenter at local, regional, and national events. Dr. Nickels is board certified in internal medicine and in hospice and palliative medicine.
CONTINUING EDUCATION: SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER IN HOSPICE PART II: De-Escalation and Communication.
Thursday, June 9, 4 PM – 5 PM EST. 1.2 continuing education units are approved for nursing and social work via Hospice Care Plus (nursing, #5-0046, exp. 12/31/23) and Bluegrass Care Navigators (social work, KBSW-SP 202207, exp. 2/18/23). To receive continuing education credit, each participate must 1) register 2) attend the entire virtual workshop and signal attendance when requested by the facilitator, and 3) complete an evaluation by 5 p.m. EST on June 16, 2022. Certificates will only be emailed to those who meet all three criteria.
EVALUATION: A link to the online evaluation will be sent to all registrants immediately following the inservice. The online evaluation will be closed at 5 p.m. EST on June 16, 2022. Please be sure to complete your evaluation prior to that date and time. CEUs can only be awarded to those who complete the online evaluation.
CERTIFICATES: Please allow 2-4 weeks for your certificate to be delivered. They will be mailed to all registrants individually using the email address you provided at registration.
COST: This inservice is free for KHN member hospices. $75 per person for non-member hospices. Please contact Hospice Care Plus to make payment at 859-986-1500. Refunds are available when cancellation is received by April 27 or in the event of cancellation.
AUDIENCE: This in-service is appropriate for clinicians in the hospice IDT: APPs, MDs/DOs, RNs, LPNs, social workers, chaplains, pharmacy.
SUMMARY: This inservice will be an interactive workshop with case-based scenarios using a communication guide based on motivational interviewing and serious illness conversation techniques.
OBJECTIVES: Participants will learn to: 1) Identify motivational interviewing techniques, 2) State de-escalation communication principles in discussing serious illness, and 3) Implement communication skills into practice.

SUMMARY: This inservice will be a didactic session to overview the current trends in alcohol and drug use in the U.S. and implications for hospice. We will review updated recommendations on best practices for diversion in hospice and on assessment and treatment of medication misuse and substance disorders in hospice and palliative care.
OBJECTIVES: Participants will learn to: 1) Recognize the epidemiology of substance use disorders, 2) Recall expert, consensus recommendations for safe opioid prescribing and monitoring in hospice, 3) Identify the six dimensions of an addiction assessment in guiding level of patient care placement, and 4) Explain the role of overdose education and naloxone access in healthcare during the opioid overdose epidemic.
