Compassionate Care Center Updates Completed

New flooring in the hallway at the Compassionate Care Center

In early 2023, Hospice Care Plus received an unexpected $10,000 gift from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. This generous gift is fondly referred to by staff as the “Couches, Coffee, or Cough Drops” donation because the donor’s only request was that the funds be used to meet the most pressing needs of the Compassionate Care Center, be they, in her words, “couches, coffee, or cough drops.”

2023 was also the 15th anniversary of the opening of the Compassionate Care Center. In recent years, the facility inevitably began showing signs of needed updates to keep the environment peaceful, private, and pleasing for patients and families. The decision was made that the $10,000 donation would be used toward these updates.

Upgraded couches in patient rooms

That’s when the Compassionate Care Center Improvement Project was born. Our fundraising staff got to work writing grants, developing goals, and inviting the community to help reach them.

“We never cease to be surprised by the way our supporters pull together for our care programs,” says Stefanie Manes, development coordinator.

In total, donors and foundations gave over $34,000 to support the updates. Donors and updates include:

Berea College Appalachian Fund provided $15,000 towards the cost of replacing the carpeted flooring with more durable, vinyl flooring. This new flooring is safer and easier to keep clean.

Kentucky Social Welfare Network contributed over $7,000 towards the purchase of new reclining chairs for patient rooms.

Good Samaritan Ministries donated over $5,000 towards the purchase of new patient beds.

The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels funded six bedside Electronic Medical Record (EMR workstations.

Jackson County Off-Roaders Association (JCORA) and Jackson County Wagon & Saddle Club both held fundraisers for Hospice Care Plus in September. Part of these funds provided an ice machine and a blanket warmer to the Compassionate Care Center. Follow us on social media to stay informed about events such as these.
