Our Speaker: Toccara Jule, RN, BSN, MBA, CPHQ, CHPN, CSSGB, CWOCN

Toccara Jule is the national nursing education director for Delta Care RX, LLC, a provider specializing in hospice and palliative pharmacy services.  At Delta Care RX, Mrs. Jule created and chaired a proprietary wound program in addition to her work developing evidence-based tools to enhance clinical skills. Mrs. Jule previously served as senior quality facilitator at Peace Health Whatcom Hospice and clinical services manager at Hospice of the Northwest. She is a member of NHPCO’s education committee and of myNHPCO’s QAPI steering committee. In addition to her bachelor’s degree in nursing and master’s in business administration, Mrs. Jule also holds a graduate certificate in advance training in healthcare ethics from the University of Washington.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Hospice Wounds: Assessment, Management & Prevention at End of Life. April 28, 3 PM – 4 PM EST. 1.1 continuing education units are approved for nursing via Hospice Care Plus, #5-0046 exp. 12/31/23. To receive continuing education credit, each participate must 1) register 2) attend the entire virtual workshop and signal attendance when requested by the facilitator, and 3) complete an evaluation by 5 p.m. EST on May 5, 2022. Certificates will only be emailed to those who meet all three criteria.

EVALUATION

A link to the online evaluation will be sent to all registrants immediately following the inservice. The online evaluation will be closed at 5 p.m. EST on May 5, 2022. Please be sure to complete your evaluation prior to that date and time. CEUs can only be awarded to those who complete the online evaluation.

CERTIFICATES

Please allow 2-4 weeks for your certificate to be delivered. Once the chat history is reviewed to confirm that you were present at the beginning and end of the inservice, KHN will then check that those who attended the entire presentation also completed an evaluation. At that point, certificates will be created for each registrant. When all have been created, they will be mailed to all registrants individually using the email address you provided at registration.

COST

This inservice is free for KHN member hospices. $75 per person for non-member hospices. Please contact Hospice Care Plus to make payment at 859-986-1500. Refunds are available when cancellation is received by April 27 or in the event of cancellation.

AUDIENCE

This in-service is appropriate for nursing and medical members of hospice and palliative care teams and their clinical supervisors.

SUMMARY

Managing wounds in the hospice population presents unique challenges and opportunities. This hospice-focused wound care training will help the field clinician engage and educate the patient/family in wound prevention techniques, effectively assess and document wounds, identify signs and symptoms that a wound is progressing from colonized to infected, and take steps to mitigate while factoring in patient/family goals and patient’s functional status.

OBJECTIVES

This presentation will address the full spectrum of pain assessment and management. Participants will learn about the prevalence and presentation of pain in common advanced illnesses and overall treatment strategies.  They will also learn about the use of uni- and multidimensional pain assessment tools, and use the collected information to determine the most likely pathogenesis of the pain. Given this assessment, participants will practice recommending a treatment plan and will learn how to develop a monitoring plan to assess therapeutic effectiveness and potential toxicity.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the inservice’s conclusion, learners will be able to:

1. Understand and implement wound assessment, documentation, and management techniques for commonly seen wounds in hospice patients.
2. List key tips for skin breakdown prevention at end of life.
3. Identify signs and symptoms of wound deterioration and infection.
