The Heart Behind The Welcome

For more than 21 years, Kathy Bryant has been one of the first smiles families encountered at Compassionate Care Plus.
For many who walked through the doors of the Compassionate Care Center, Kathy was one of the first faces they met. Throughout their loved one’s stay, families came to know an entire team of compassionate caregivers. Along the way, Kathy became a familiar presence, greeting them each day, answering questions, sharing stories, and offering a smile when it was needed most.
Even today, it is not uncommon for people in the community to ask, “How’s Kathy?” or “Is Kathy still there?” Long after their loved one’s stay at the Center, families remember the kindness she showed them and the genuine relationships she built.
Kathy Recalls Some of Her Favorite Moments
When Kathy joined Hospice Care Plus on January 3, 2005, as an Administrative Assistant in the Berea office, she never imagined the journey that lay ahead. As the organization grew, so did her role. She later served on the planning committee that helped shape what would become the Compassionate Care Center before it opened in 2008.
“We even got to help name it,” Kathy recalled. “I hope it will always be a center for compassionate care.”
When asked what she’ll remember most about her career, Kathy doesn’t mention awards or accomplishments.
Instead, she talks about the people.
“The friendships, the families, the volunteers. It’s been like a mission,” she said. “I’ve felt led to be here, and I feel very blessed to have had this opportunity in my life.”
Among the many memories she’ll carry into retirement, one of the most meaningful involves Annie, the Compassionate Care Center’s first therapy dog.
Kathy fondly remembers the Northern family and how close they became to Annie during Mrs. Northern’s stay at the Compassionate Care Center.
“Each morning, Mr. Northern began his day with a cup of coffee and the newspaper before taking Annie outside for her daily brushing on the patio. Their five sons brought so much laughter to the Center, even celebrating family birthdays together with a cookout. Before long, they all felt like family.”
Kathy recalled that the night Mrs. Northern passed away, her family gathered around her bedside singing softly.
Annie quietly walked to the doorway and laid down at the threshold.
“She never crossed into the room,” Kathy remembered. “She just stayed there.”
After that night, Annie was never quite the same. Kathy says the beloved therapy dog seemed to grieve Mrs. Northern’s passing alongside the family and staff who had grown to love her.
Kathy also remembers longtime volunteer Charles Reeves, whose servant’s heart perfectly reflected the mission of Compassionate Care Plus.
“He was like a second father to everyone here,” she said. “If someone needed something, Charles made sure it happened.”
When one patient wished to marry before the end of life, Charles quietly gathered everything needed to make the wedding a reality. Balloons, flowers, a veil, cake, and decorations. He made sure the couple could celebrate their love surrounded by family.
“That’s just who Charles was,” Kathy said. “He loved people.”
For Kathy, those moments capture what Compassionate Care Plus has always been.
“Hospice is a community coming together. Not just our team, but the whole community blessing families.”
What She’ll Miss Most
As retirement begins, Kathy looks forward to spending more time with her husband, visiting family, watching her nieces and nephews grow, and perhaps one day becoming what she affectionately calls a “lake lady” in Florida.
When she thinks about what she’ll miss most about her time with CCP, she says she’ll miss the people most of all.
“Talking with families. Seeing the blessings every day and the precious friendships along the way.”
As she closes this chapter, Kathy hopes the community remembers one important truth about Compassionate Care Plus.
“We’re not a place to die. We’re a place to live. We’re here to help families create memories, share love, laughter, and blessings during some of life’s most difficult moments. I wouldn’t have stayed here for more than 21 years if I didn’t believe in this place, its mission, and what we do for others.”
After more than two decades of service, Kathy Bryant leaves behind a legacy that reaches far beyond her years of employment. She has been a trusted friend, a comforting presence, and a familiar face to thousands of patients, families, volunteers, and coworkers who walked through the doors of the Compassionate Care Center.
Her kindness, steady presence, and genuine love for others have helped define what Compassionate Care Plus means to so many in our community.
While Kathy may be retiring, her impact will continue to be felt for years to come.
